As a music teacher, I am always looking for creative ways to engage my students and enhance their learning experience inside their core classroom. One of the ways I like to do this for my younger students is through the use of calendar songs. Incorporating calendar songs into your curriculum can be a great way to help your students solidify their learning of the calendar dates, holidays, and seasons while also fostering their musical skills. In this post, I have compiled a list of 10 fun and educational calendar songs that will help you sing your way through the year with your elementary students.
Days of the Week (Frere Jacques)
These songs are wonderful for many reasons. First, Frere Jacques is a common echo song! That means that you can sing and the students can echo you back, making for an easy learning experience. I also love to use these songs as welcome songs as my students are entering the classroom.
Week Songs
Students love singing along to tunes that they already know. One of the ways I like to extend some of these songs is by assigning students to each Day of the Week. When that day of the week is sang, they stand up. Later, you could move that to unpitched percussion for even more fun!
Sunday, Monday (to the tune of “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star”)
Sunday, Monday, Tuesday too.
Wednesday, Thursday just for you.
Friday, Saturday that’s the end .
Now let’s say those days again!
Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday!
Every Week has 7 days (Sung to “If you’re happy and you know it”)
Every week has 7 days, yes it does.
Every week has 7 days, yes it does.
Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday,
Thursday, Friday, Saturday.
Every week has 7 days, yes it does. (clap, clap)
And today is (name of the day 2x), yes it is.
And today is (name of the day 2x), yes it is.
And today is (name of the day 2x)
Yes today is (name of the day 2x)
And today is (name of the day 2x) yes it is.
Days of the week (to the tune of “The Addams Family”)
Days of the week, (snap snap)
Days of the Week (to the tune of “Oh My Darling Clementine”)
There are seven days, there are seven days,
There are seven days in the week.
There are seven days, there are seven days,
There are seven days in the week.
Sunday, Monday, Tuesday Wednesday,
Thursday, Friday, Saturday.
Sunday, Monday, Tuesday Wednesday,
Thursday, Friday, Saturday.
Days of the Week Sung to: Yankee Doodle
Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday
Month Songs
For the month songs, I love to ask students what month their birthday comes in and have them stand or jump when their month comes! We sing these songs at different tempos and in different voices to review some lower elementary musical concepts.
Months of the Year (to the tune of “Ten Little Indians”)
January, February, March, and April,
May, June, July, August, and September,
October, November, and December,
These are the months of the year.
Oh, if you know the month (Sung to: If you’re happy and you know it)
Oh if you know the month, shout it out
Oh if you know the month, shout it out
Oh if you know the month, and you’re super proud to show it
Oh if you know the month, shout it out
Oh if you know the day, whisper it now
Oh if you know the date clap it now
